Interview with Yzabelle Wuthrich
Delighted to present my interview with Yzabelle Wuthrich, a passionate and ambitious graphic designer and illustrator. We talked more about herself, artwork, creativity and other cool stuff. Enjoy!
Can you please tell
readers a bit about yourself.
Hi, my name is Yzabelle Wuthrich. I’m a self-taught freelance graphic
designer and illustrator from the Philippines. I majored in Advertising
Management, a course that focuses more on the business side of the advertising
industry. However, right after
graduation, I decided to pursue a career that I really love…which is in the
world of art and design.
When was your starting
point as an artist.
Before I learned how
to read and write, I already knew how to draw. When I was young, everything
that surrounds me is a big canvas.
I draw on almost anything—walls, floors, tables, and even my face (in
some unfortunate cases, in others’ faces).
I always loved illustrating things that go inside my head
and until now, I never let go of that passion. So here I am, 22 years later, still doing what I love most
and now making it as a career.
Artistically
how have your grown, how different is it now compared to when you started.
Although my artistic
capability and passion is something innate, I wouldn’t be where I am today
without the influences of other great artists. I started out by merely copying their works and styles. Now, I learned to create my own style
and make illustrations that I can confidently call my own.
My perfect working space must be a place
where I can have all the privacy I need—in short, my room. Aside from my laptop, there must be a
pen and paper within my reach, a nice cup of tea, good music playing on the
background…then I’m ready to rock and roll!
So far what has been your
biggest challenge?
I’m only starting out as an artist so creating
a body of work with my own distinctive style is a current challenge for
me. Also, I am one of those
starving and struggling artists who are still waiting for their big break, and marketing
myself in today’s’ competitive environment is hard. Nevertheless, such challenges excite me.
How do you pick your
subjects to draw.
I consider my works as “upgraded”
doodles—you know, those scribbles you make absentmindedly. My subjects are always random. I start out by drawing shapes and lines
and from there, I work wherever my imagination takes me. In some cases, I get inspired from the books
I read or movies I saw then interpret my favorite scenes through illustrations.
What else are you
passionate about besides arts and illustration.
Music is one of my first loves. I started playing the classical piano
at very young age and I also taught myself how to play the guitar. When I’m not drawing, I do cover songs
and play them by ear on the piano.
I’m also into photography, both film and digital. I had photography classes before and it
peaked my interest ever since.
Top 3 visually inspiring
movies.
Copola’s Marie Antoinette, Moulin Rouge
and Romeo + Juliet (both by Baz Luhrmann.
I love him). They are feast
for my eyes!
What is the major
satisfaction you gain from art.
Having my ideas and imagination come to
life and become materialized.
How do you
define creativity and what does it mean to you?
I always compare the concept of creativity
with how cavemen discovered fire.
Who knew that rubbing two stones would create something that is
essential in this world. In short,
creativity is an ability of a person wherein he/she creates something with a
purpose. It is finding a
solution to a problem and it starts with an imagination and believing in
possibility.
Where is your favorite spot in The Philippines.
I am born and raised here in Manila but the
best places in the country are outside the city. The Philippines is known for its beaches so the Boracay
Island is a must visit. The
breathtaking Bangui Windmills in Ilocos Norte also tops my list.
What do you like most about what you do.
Being able to express my
thoughts freely through art.
