Stephanie Hsu : GU Schälchen

Concept Info:
'The concept of this project is to develop a design for a bowl that ergonomically fits in the hand while eating.
The concept of the bowl focuses on the eating customs within Chinese culture and is a modern alternative to the traditional porcelain rice bowl that people are accustomed to seeing. Through the exploration of forms, the design of this bowl is intended to present a playful and modern variation from the traditional shape of everyday bowls.
The curves of the bowl allows for users to have a more personal and interactive experience as one finds a holding position in which the bowl fits comfortably to the curves of the hand. The name GU comes from the Chinese word for valley 谷 (Gǔ). The dipping forms of the bowl are inspired by U-shaped characteristics of valley forms. Similar to the creation of valleys by erosion, the original mold of this bowl was created by the continuous friction of the hand. The two depressions of the bowl act in a similar way as valleys do such that it becomes an area where liquids are able to collect. The central ridge become a division which allows for the separation of food.'
